Meet Tim Colter

Tim Colter has been thinking about how people and organizations grow for as long as he can remember. As a Principal at ghSMART, he works closely with leaders, boards, and investors to help them figure out what’s next – whether that’s planning CEO succession, accelerating rising talent, or navigating big transitions.
We sat down with Tim to hear about the moments and ideas that have shaped his journey, what excites him most about partnering with ghSMART’s clients, and how he’s helping the firm, and its leaders, navigate the fast-changing world of leadership.
A Mission-Oriented Career Path
From teaching to advising global CEOs, Tim’s career has been shaped by a clear mission: helping individuals, teams, and organizations grow into the best version of themselves.
“I’ve always had a mission orientation in my work,” Tim shares. “At the core, I’ve been drawn to how communities, teams, and people grow. And how you can support that journey.”
That sense of purpose has been a constant. As a philosophy and history major, Tim’s academic grounding focused on how societies and people evolve, “in good and bad ways,” as he puts it. Volunteerism and service also played a central role in his early life.
Tim’s early work as a teacher gave him a firsthand view of growth as a deeply personal and contextual process. He learned that meaningful development isn’t just about spotting gaps but about understanding each individual’s unique starting point and environment. This focus on trust and tailored roadmaps now informs how he coaches senior leaders navigating complex organizational challenges.
“If we want students to succeed, not just in the next grade but in life, you have to start where they are, understand their context, and build a plan that fits their needs. That lesson has stayed with me and shapes how I support leaders today,” Tim reflects.
From Teaching to Consulting
Tim’s path from teaching to management consulting might seem like a jump, but for him, it was a natural extension of his mission to support growth and evolution. After starting his career as a teacher, he realized that to have a broader impact, especially on organizations and communities, he needed to develop additional skills and perspectives.
Moving from teaching to consulting wasn’t a leap but a natural broadening of Tim’s mission to foster growth – just on a larger scale. Pursuing his MBA at Yale and joining McKinsey & Company equipped him with new tools and frameworks, enabling him to operate at the intersection of individual potential and systemic change. He learned to translate the principles of personal development into scalable strategies that help entire organizations evolve.
“I saw people across public, social, and private sectors making a big impact, and I realized there were gaps between where I was and where I wanted to be to operate at that level,” Tim explains. Pursuing an MBA entering the world of strategy consulting were key steps in building that broader, cross-industry view of leadership and problem-solving.
Strategy and Innovation
At McKinsey, Tim focused on strategy and innovation, helping clients translate big-picture plans into actionable ventures, new products, and market entries. He saw how even the best-laid plans faltered without leaders and teams aligned and prepared to execute.
“I loved the challenge of connecting strategy with the talent and organizational models needed to bring ideas to life.”
This insight sharpened his focus on ensuring that leadership development isn’t an afterthought but a core part of driving innovation and growth. This blend of teaching, consulting, and innovation has shaped how Tim approaches his work today: helping leaders and teams figure out their next steps, and how to get there.
Partnering with “Shapers”
So when ghSMART reached out to Tim for a conversation, it didn’t take long for things to click. “Within five minutes of getting on the phone, I thought, ‘This is it. This is the way to integrate everything.’”
He joined the firm to go all-in on executive advisory and leadership development, focusing directly on the “who” behind strategic growth. Today, Tim’s client work includes CEO succession planning, executive coaching and development, and future leader acceleration, across both corporate and private equity clients.
Tim finds himself especially energized by clients he calls “shapers,” which he describes as organizations that are actively defining or reshaping the future of their industries. These range from companies building the next generation of data infrastructure to those changing how creative work gets done, to innovators in wealth management.
Tim helps leaders cultivate agility, resilience, and a mindset oriented toward continuous evolution, so they can keep pace with rapidly shifting markets and technologies.
“I’m drawn to people who are constantly thinking about growth and evolution,” he says. “It goes back to that original thread of supporting those who want to become a new version of themselves.”
Building for the Future
Tim is also playing a central role in helping shape ghSMART’s approach to AI, joining an internal team focused on how to support clients, and the firm itself, as technology transforms leadership and talent.
He believes the definition of leadership is shifting, and that firms like ghSMART have a critical role to play. “The pace of change and the complexity of what leadership even means is increasing. There’s going to be a huge revisiting of what leadership and talent look like in the age of AI.”
He’s also passionate about system-level client relationships, and engagements where context is shared across teams and time. “The work is most impactful when it’s not done in a vacuum. There’s a compounding effect when you understand the full picture and can connect the dots.”
Life at ghSMART, and Beyond
Tim appreciates how ghSMART’s model allows people to show up fully, in both work and in life. “The firm has truly walked the walk,” he says. Whether navigating unexpected personal commitments or being there for family during critical moments, he’s experienced firsthand how colleagues, from mentors to firm leaders, have stepped in to support.
“It’s not just talk. People show up in the life moments that matter most.”
Outside of work, Tim’s relationship with his wife, Kate, is central. “She’s a creative, and she helps me think beyond the black-and-white lines we sometimes operate in,” he says. “Kate and my family are the foundation for everything.”
Staying Curious, Staying Connected
For Tim, the journey is all about staying curious and connected to clients, their evolving leadership challenges, and the broader changes reshaping the world of work. As he puts it, “There’s a huge role for firms like ghSMART to help define what leadership means in the years ahead, especially as technology and AI continue to transform everything.”
Whether working closely with CEOs or helping the next generation of leaders step into their potential, Tim’s mission remains clear: supporting growth, evolution, and lasting impact.
